Xiaobai Beauty Salon

Online Booking
Service

2019.03-2019.05
Overview

Xiaobai Beauty Salon, known for 7 years of high-end beauty services, was transitioning to digital booking. Despite a loyal word-of-mouth clientele, the salon aims to expand its reach. The project was to make visibility for clients, ensuring easy access to appointments and attracting new customers.

Role
UX/UI Designer
User research, Wireframes, Visual Design, Prototyping, Usability test.

Problem

With the majority of Xiaobai Beauty Salon's clients are not Singaporean, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant decline in customers. To rebuild trust and attract new clients, Xiaobai recognizes the urgent need to digitalize the salon booking features, enhancing credibility and ensuring a seamless connection with potential customers.

The current absence of such a platform hinders the salon's ability to effectively communicate its unique value to potential customers.

Research Survey

Before I started to work on the booking app, I would like to have some generic understanding of the current users' pain points and expectations about the digitalization platform in the beauty industry. I conducted quantitive research with 44 current salon customers, ranging from 26-40 years old, who used to visit the shop at least 3 times a month for the services.
My research provided-

  • Understanding the general booking methods
  • User's general understanding about salon online booking services.
  • Salon services features

User Interview

After the quantitive research, I decided I needed to get more detailed insights from the existing salon customers to understand the challenges they faced with the booking service and how they would like about online booking.

"I really like the shop owner, but sometimes I need to wait a day to make an appointment as there are some back-and-forth messages on Line and I can't see what the actual timetable looks like in the shop."
"I like the nail styles in the shops and the store cats. However, I always have difficulties in finding some references from her previous works."
"I usually recommend the shop to my friends, but there is no much reference about the shop and some of my friends get skeptical about my recommendation."

Personas

After the analysis of both user surveys and interviews, I am able to define the user profile through the personas.

Frustration
  • Long response time about the booking service.
  • Forgot the scheduled time
  • Hard to find the references for the ideal concepts of the treatment.
Tammy Ng

Aspiration
" I want to look good all the time, so I don't mind how much money I spent as long as I can do the treatment on time."
Frustration
  • Unable to get ideal schedule for the beauty treatment
  • Do not look good because of the delay on the treatment

Ideation

After completing thorough research, I created low-fidelity wireframes and shared them with stakeholders, integrating valuable design insights. Key main tasks for the digitalize platform should include:

Streamlined Booking
Users can easily find the pathway to book salon services and they can have a written notification from their devices.
Clear booking steps
I ensured the booking process is straightforward and simple, facilitate seamless appointment scheduling for users.
Showcase
A section was crafted to showcase salon treatment and provide essential information.

Visual Direction

I implemented the current business trend by using unique handwriting styles for headings. This reflects a modern and stylish aesthetics and aligns with the industry's current practice. On the other hand, the choice of orange hues symbolizes the revitalizing experience clients can expect after the beauty treatments

Solution

A functional salon website that provides online booking features so that the users can set up anytime and anywhere without back-and-forth confirmation with the shop owners. The booking process will be only three easy steps with steppers as indicators to help the user achieve the task.
digitalization solution platform
Provide updated references for the beauty treatment connected with the salon's Instagram pictures.
instagram solution
Product cards and gallery section for people to understand about the services. I also incorporated with the orange color designed to echo their brand color

Usability Test

Given the relatively modest scale of this project and the pandemic situation, I carried out an unmoderated usability test. This decision was driven by the objective of determining whether users could navigate the process of scheduling an appointment without the need for a tutorial or explicit instructions. The project's scope was straightforward, with minimal complexity that didn't warrant extensive moderation for feedback and user reactions. A total of 86 participants took part in the test.

Tasks for users:
  • Make booking through the website.
  • Identify the improvement over the product pages.
  • Understand users' feeling over the salon style.

Project Learnings

This is my first design project to work with real business and there are lots of things I learned from this project:
  • Time Management

In navigating the intricate design process, I gained valuable insights into effective time management. Recognizing the multitude of tasks involved, I discovered the significance of prioritization to maintain project momentum. To streamline my workflow and enhance communication with stakeholders, I initiated the use of project management tools, such as drafting a Gantt Chart. This approach not only assisted in organizing tasks but also facilitated transparent communication and progress tracking.

  • Stakeholder Management

The ability to navigate discussions with stakeholders is a crucial aspect of successful design projects. I developed a skillful approach to engaging with stakeholders in alignment with contractual agreements and project specifics. Even in the face of differing opinions, I maintained composure and employed a metrics-driven rationale to substantiate perspectives. This not only fostered constructive dialogue but also ensured that the project remained in line with its overarching objectives.

  • Critical Thinking
Critical thinking emerged as a cornerstone skill in my decision-making process throughout the project. This approach allowed me to comprehensively understand user needs and align them with the overarching goals of the products. Actively questioning assumptions, I fostered an environment that embraced diverse opinions. This way of thinking not only strengthened the foundation of my decision-making but also contributed to a more inclusive and innovative design process.
